Google Maps vs Waze in Costa Rica: traffic, dirt roads, and not getting lost

Costa Rica is easy to drive until it is not. Highways between San José and the coast look straightforward on a screen—but the last stretch to a property pin might be gravel, a steep condominium lane, or a path that looks “fine” on the map until you are on it. Formal addresses are often incomplete (“200 meters west of the pulpería”), so buyers rely on GPS pins, WhatsApp, and two apps almost everyone uses: Google Maps and Waze.

Google Maps — best for the big picture: Satellite and Street View (where available) help you see whether a road is paved or dirt before you commit—especially for rural showings in Guanacaste, Nosara hills, or South Pacific access roads. Download offline maps for your region before you lose signal in valleys. Google is strong for choosing routes on paper, measuring distance to a listing, and sharing a pin with family back home. Waze — best for live driving in traffic: Waze crowdsources jams, accidents, and police reports. In the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM)—San José, Escazú, Santa Ana, Heredia, Cartago—morning and afternoon work rush can be intense. Typical crunch times run roughly 6:30–9:00 a.m. and 4:30–7:00 p.m. on weekdays, though it varies by corridor. Circunvalación, Route 27 toward Escazú, General Cañas, Paseo Colón, San Pedro, and bridges into the west side stack up fast. Waze reroutes around bottlenecks when it can; Google shows traffic too, but Waze users in Costa Rica often swear by it for daily commuting.

Use both together: Open the listing pin in Google to sanity-check terrain; navigate with Waze when you are moving during rush hour. If the apps disagree, favor the route that stays on numbered highways (Route 1, 27, 32, coastal routes) until the agent confirms the final turn.

When maps lie (sort of): A road drawn as a white or yellow line is not always asphalt. Maintenance tracks, farm access, and seasonal mud routes appear as legitimate paths. Some are perfectly fine in dry season in a high-clearance car; others dead-end at a river or gate.
